USES OF PAST SIMPLE TENSE

Tenses i.e. Present ,Past and Future have their different uses connecting with the four forms. In English, as per (Affirmative, Negative, Interrogative, Interrogative Negative) sentences, the following are the uses of different tenses: 

PAST TENSE

Past tense is refers to the past time of the verbs. It is classified in to four forms:

    1. Simple Past or Past Indefinite
    2. Past continuous or Past Progressive 
    3. Past Perfect
    4. Past Perfect Continuous / Progressive 

                                  Structure

          1.SIMPLE PAST TENSE (INDEFINITE)

          1.1. Structure of Affirmative sentences:

                      [ Subject + v-2 + object. ]

           e.g.;
             subject           2nd form of verb          object
          1. I                 hit                            the ball.
          2. She            went                        to the station.
          3. Hari           drove                       a car.
          4. You            wrote                       a letter.
          5. They          played                     badminton.
          6. Sita            sang                        a song. 
          7. He             wrote                      a story.
          8. Reena        spoke                    English language.
          9. She            drove                      the car carefully.
          10. He             went                         to market. 

          1.2. Structure of Negative sentences:

                  [ Subject + did not + v-1(first form of the verb) + object ]

          e.g.;

          1.  I did not write well.
          2.  He did not complain to his teacher.
          3.  Raaj did not play basketball.
          4. They did not go to the church.
          5.  Reeta did not attend online classes.
          6.  It did not work properly.
          7.  We did not sing a song.

          1.3. Structure of Interrogative sentences:

                [ Did + Subject  + v-first form of verb + object ? ]

          e.g.;  

          1.  Did I play cricket?
          2.  Did we speak the truth?
          3.  Did you sing well?
          4.  Did he write?
          5.  Did she run?
          6.  Did Milan dance?
          7.  Did it move?
          8.  Did they steal?

          1.4. Structure of  Interrogative Negative sentences:

              i. [ Did + subject + not + v-1 + object? ] or

             ii. [ Didn't + subject + v-1 + object? ]

          e.g.; 

          1. Did he not write? or Didn't he write? 
          2. Did I not speak? or Didn't I speak? 
          3. Did they not work? or Didn't they work? 
          4. Did it not move? or Didn't it move?
           

          USE OF SIMPLE PAST TENSE IN DIFFERENT SITUATIONS : 

          Simple past tense is used to express:

          1. To indicate an action that happened in the past and completed actions :
          e.g. 
           Ram drank water at 5 a.m.
           He went to school at 9.30 a.m.
           Sita visited the place five months ago.
          2. Reference to a part habit :
          e.g. 
          I always carried a book in my bag.
          He always rode a bicycle to school.
           They never ate rice at night.
          3. When the time of the past action is asked about :
          e.g. 
           When did you write the letter?
           When did your brother arrive?
          4. When two events took place at the same time :
          e.g.  
           When Ranjit arrived in my house, I went to the market.
           When the teacher entered the classroom, all the student stood up.
          5. For an activity completed in the past :
          e.g.
           Ravi lived here for three years.
           Rita worked in this school for three months.
           I never missed online classes.
