TENSE
Each Language has its own grammatical concept and usages, for which it is easy to understand the sense.
In English language, the grammatical concept tense play a vital role, it helps us to read, write, and speak the sentences correctly. Now, you must have understood how important this tense is to everyone.
The following definition will help you to understand the concept clearly.
Definition of Tense :
- The relation between time and verb is called Tense.
- Tense is that form of verb which states the time and action of an events.
In English, verbs come basically in three tenses :
- Present
- Past
- Future
For examples :
- Sita is playing in the garden.(Present Time)
- Ravi threw the tennis ball.(Past Time)
- Raaj will participate in the competition.(Future Time)
But, There are many sentences of present or past tense that may denote future time actions and the future tense also denote present time action.
For examples :
- My brother is coming on next Thursday.
- The train arrives at 8p.m.
- Will you merry me?
- I was hopping you'd stay for party.
In sentence 1,the verb (is coming) , present tense refers to future time. In the sentence 2, the verb (arrives), present tense refers to future time. In the sentence 3, the verb (will), future tense refers to the present time. In the sentence 4, the verb (was hopping), past tense refers to present time.
